The Creep

The Creep

A detective must take on an unfortunate case from a former lover. Will he be able to solve the case? A somber tale from Dark Horse written by John Arcudi (Major Bummer, Doom Patrol) and illustrated by Jonathan Case (House Of Night, Batman ’66).

Oxel is a private detective who has had a hard life. Unfortunately for him he has a facial disfigurement which brings him unwanted stares from children and insults from unruly teens. One day he receives a letter from an old friend whom he hasn’t seen in 20 years. The letter describes how her son has committed suicide and that she needs his help to find out why. A comic about how our experiences shape where out futures lie.

This is not a feel good story but one about tragedy and how we go through it. It’s a compelling story, you become very invested in Oxel and the fate of the children. The illustrations are like being in sad, noir pulp style Archie world. If you are looking for a serious read then give The Creep a try.

DC Comics 52 Omnibus

DC Comics 52 Omnibus

After the events of Infinite Crisis, Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman have disappeared with no one knowing their whereabouts. Not to be confused with the New 52, DC Comics created 52 as a vehicle to feature some of their less popular characters such as Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Black Adam, Animal Man and other lesser known characters. The introduction of Batwoman is also part of the series.

This series came out 1 issue week for 52 weeks and featured stories written by some of DC best writers which included Geoff Johns, Mark Waid and Grant Morrison and were drawn by a huge list of DC’s most talented artists which included Brian Bolland, Howard Chaykins, Ivan Reis, JG Jones, Adam Hughes, George Perez, Andy Kubert, and Ethan Van Sciver.

All in all the series was great for those of you want to read more in depth about the other characters that DC has in their stable. This series also featured many spin-off stories. Some notable ones that are worth reading are DC World War III featuring Black Adam, The Search for Ray Palmer, and  52 Pick-up Booster Gold

Dial H Volume 1 Into You

Dial H Volume 1 Into You

A random event gives one man the ability to become an array of random hero’s all at the touch of a rotary phone Another reboot of an older series, DC’s Dial H is brought into the modern era by author China Mieville (Hellblazer) and illustrator Mateus Santolouco (Cover Girl, Two Guns).

Nelson Jent isn’t doing to good, he is overweight, chain smoking and the best days of his life are behind him. Seeing his friend is in danger he tries to help but gets his ass kicked. Trying to call the police on a near by pay phone he is suddenly transformed into Boy Chimney. He becomes a strange creature who can smother people with smoke and use the smoke to fly away. After saving his friend, Nelson returns to the phone to try and understand what just happened.

The series starts off with more questions than answers. But, once you get going there is a clear reasoning behind everything. Mateus does an amazing job of bringing all these wonderful heroes to life with all their strange abilities.  Sadly this series just got cancelled and it’s concluding with issue 15. But, on the bright side it gave them enough time to have a proper ending.

DC Comics Green Lantern Rebirth

DC Comics Green Lantern Rebirth

The long awaited return of Hal Jordan is finally here. Fans of the Silver Age Green Lantern have wondered for many years if or when will he return. This mini series is written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Ethan Van Sciver.

After the events that saw Hal Jordan die while being inhabited by the entity known as the Parallax, he came back the DC Universe as the Spectre for a number of years. Green Lantern Rebirth tells the story of Hal’s return to the Green Lantern Corps as the world is now threaten by another Green Lantern gone rogue, Sinestro. Fighting along side the Justice League, he takes on the daunting task of stopping Sinestro before he can execute his master plan.

An excellent story by master storyteller Geoff Johns who also orchestrated the return of Hawkman in the JSA series. I never was really interested in Green Lantern titles until reading this one. This story is the beginning of the path to Sinestro Corps War and as well Blackest Night. Ethan Van Sciver artwork is excellent and the epic battle scenes between Sinestro and Hal Jordan is well done. If you’re looking for a starting point for Green Lantern, this is definitely the series to pick up!

Penguin Pride And Prejudice

Penguin Pride And Prejudice

An in depth look at the man behind the penguin. We are able to see how his past shaped him into the man he is today. This mini series by DC is written by Gregg Hurwitz (Batman The Dark Knight, Foolkiller: White Angels) and illustrated by Szymon Kudranski (Farmhouse, Spawn).

The Penguin has not always been the feared and respected man that he is today. It’s taken years of merciless work to climb to the top. There was a time when he was nothing more than just a little boy seeking the acceptance of his family and peers. But, this was something that young Oswald was never able to grasp. Instead he had to teach himself that to be accepted you have to take what should be yours.

An origin story about the Penguin that takes you back and forth between feeling sorry for him and being disgusted by him. It’s a perfect blend of the past being woven into his present situation. The artwork gives off a cold and lonely feeling that is very Penguinesq. Another origin story from the world of Batman that you should be sure to get.

DC Comics Flash Rebirth

DC Comics Flash Rebirth

After being presumed dead for almost 25 years, Barry Allen, the Silver Age Flash, has returned to the DC Universe. This mini-series is written by Geoff Johns (JSA, Green Lantern Rebirth) and artwork is done by Ethan Van Sciver (Green Lantern Rebirth, New X-men).

Barry Allen was killed in the original DC “Crisis” story, Crisis on Infinite Earths, while trying to stop the Anti-monitor. There was much speculation on how Barry returned during the later parts of Final Crisis. Now that he’s back, he has to deal with all that has happened during his absent as well as the people that loved and respected him.

Again, Geoff Johns has not disappointed. I loved the story and it is also a great lead in to Blackest Night and as well Flashpoint. Ethan Van Sciver artwork is well done just like his previous DC titles.

Comic Review: Winter Soldier Volume The Longest Winter

Winter Soldier Volume 1 The Longest Winter

Winter Soldier Volume 1 The Longest Winter

Bucky Barnes must become something from his past, the Winter Soldier, in order to track down an enemy from long ago. An excellent Marvel series that is written by Ed Brubaker (Criminal, Iron Fist) and illustrated by Butch Guice (Resurrection Man, Ruse).

James Barnes must now go back to the dangerous world of spies and partner up with the Black Widow. Recently, it was discovered that ex-sleeper cell agents from Russia have awoken and disappeared. With no one knowing where they are or what they could be planing it’s up to Barnes. If anyone can stop these deadly agents surely it’s the man who trained them–the Winter Soldier.

The Marvel universe is full of super powered people so it’s nice to read an intriguing story about regular people. Brubaker brings his usual writing style but amps the deceit and unexpected twists to a level befitting that of spies. The artwork has a very sleek and sexy style to it. This is another awesome series cut down in its prime at issue 19.

DC Comics Sinestro Corps War

DC Comics Sinestro Corps War

The Green Lantern Corps face an epic war against Sinestro who now has an army of ring barriers of his own. This story is written by Geoff Johns (Infinite Crisis, Green Lantern Rebirth) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Batman Black and White) and drawn by Ivan Reis, Patrick Gleason, and Ethan Van Sciver.

After his defeat by Hal Jordan in Green Lantern Rebirth, Sinestro is imprisoned by the Guardians of the Green Lanterns. With his hatred for the Green Lantern Corps is brewing,  he plots his plans for revenge and creates the ultimate weapon that will destroy them. This leads to his escape and an all out war with his army of minions hellbent on annihilating the Corp.

I know I said this many times but Geoff Johns has once again blown me away with his masterful storytelling. The battles are epic and is definitely not for the faint of heart. After the shock of the first issue, I was craving for more!  Ivan Reis, Patrick Gleason and Ethan Van Sciver did an excellent job illustrating this series.  This story puts you on the path that leads you to Blackest Night.

Marvel Comics Amazing Spider-man One More Day

Marvel Comics Amazing Spider-man One More Day

With his world slowing unraveling, Peter Parker must deal with a situation where his actions as a masked superhero has hurt someone close to him. J Michael Straczynski (Midnight Nation, Earth One Superman) and Joe Quesada (Daredevil) team up to tell this heart felt story of a man who has to find a way to save the one person who has been with him through everything.

Aunt May was critically injured during the Back in Black storyline during an attempt on Peter Parker’s life contracted by the Kingpin. This is a direct result of Parker revealing to the world that he is Spider-man. Now with Aunt May in the intensive care ward at the hospital and unable to keep up with the mounting bill. The hospital is giving an ultimatum. Pay the hospital bills for intensive care or they would have to transfer Aunt May to regular care where she may not survive her injuries. Parker is desperate to find a way to solve his money problems but at what cost?

Have you ever run into a situation where you have to try to do everything you can to save someone but no matter what you do, you can’t find a solution. Once I started reading this story, I couldn’t stop. The intensity and the feeling of desperation transfers from Peter Parker directly to you which makes you feel like you’re completely part of the story. I always have loved the JMS run on Amazing Spider-man and this story is no different. Marvel’s big boss, Joe Quesada, does a spectacular job on the artwork. This story directly leads into the Brand New Day story line.
