Batman Incorporated (2012), Volume 1: Demon Star

Batman Incorporated (2012), Volume 1: Demon Star

Batman Incorporated is written Grant Morrison (Batman, New X-men, JLA) with artwork by Chris Burham (The Armory War).

Demon Star begins after the end original Batman Incorporated (2010) series. Batman and Robin, Damian, must lead a fight against Talia Al Ghul who attempting to take over Gotham City with an army of Leviathan agents. To add to the escalating problem, Talia has placed a bounty on her son, Damian.

Unlike the original Batman Incorporated series that was set prior to the new 52 relaunch,  this new series does not focus on the group of “Batmen” Bruce has assembled but more on Batman and Robin. The Batman Incorporated team is more of  a side characters in this series.  Fans of Damian as Robin will definitely like this series as he is the main focal point of this series. This first story arc is excellent and definitely gets you hooked from the start and craving for more!

One other book you probably might want to read to bridge the gap between the first series and the second series is Batman Leviathan Strikes – One Shot.

This first volume of Batman Incorporated is available in both Softcover and Hardcover

Avatar, The Last Airbender: The Promise

For fans of the show who can never get enough Avatar this is a welcome edition. Dark Horse brings back Aang and team Avatar as if they never left, with the help of author Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese, Level Up) and artist team Gurihiru (Fantastic Four, Spiderman).

Zuko is now the Fire Lord and ruling is never as easy as it seems. With the war over, now is the perfect time to spread peace. The harmony restoration movement is there for just that reason, to return Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom back to their people. A seemingly easy task but with many unforeseeable consequences.

Instantly, you are drawn back in to everything you love about Avatar. Aang with his words of wisdom and moments of complete childlessness. The stern but lovable Toph Bei Fong and the continuation of her own creation-metal bending. Sokka, the loyal maker of plans and catchphrases. The wonderfully bright and warm coloring prepares you for that happy, tingly feeling that you only get from the world of Avatar. It’s good to be back.

Marvel Comics Civil War TP Cover

Civil War is a 7 part issue mini series featuring writing by Mark Millar (Wolverine, Ultimates, JLA) and artwork by Steve McNiven (CrossGen’s Mystic, Marvel Knights 4, Wolverine).

Following the events of House of M and Decimation, the US Government unanimously agreed to enact Superheroes Registration Act after the New Warriors filming a reality show end up causing an explosion created by Nitro which ended up blowing a neighbourhood killing 612 people including children.

The Superheroes Registration Act requires all heroes that are superpowered or non-superpowered to register with the US Government thereby also requiring them to reveal their identities as well.   Failure to do so will result in the person being deemed a criminal.

The Act causes a huge rift between all the heroes in Marvel Universe with those who are opposed to the Act lead by Captain America and those who are for the Act lead by Iron Man.

The story is well written with lots of twists and turns as you would expect from Mark Millar. Steve McNiven’s artwork is great. A must read for those who are just getting into Marvel Comics as it sets up many of the major events in the Marvel Universe in the last 8 years!

Civil War is available in 7 single issues, tradepaperback and hardcover

Comic Review: Before Watchmen Comedian/Rorschach

Before Watchmen Comedian/Rorschach

Before Watchmen Comedian/Rorschach

Watchmen is back with 2 of its darker members, the Comedian and Rorschach. This DC title is written by Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets, Spaceman) with The Comedian illustrated by J.G. Jones (Doc Savage, 52) and illustrations for Rorschach by Lee Bermejo (Joker, Daredevil)

In The Comedian, we see where he fits throughout modern history. It turns out he has a long standing history with the Kennedy family. Also we see his time during the Vietnam war and the atrocities he has committed. In Rorschach, we get a deeper look into who the man really is and what makes him tick. More than once he is entrenched in violence and fighting for his survival. Soon he finds himself being the prey when he thinks that he is the predator.

Both series have a firm story line that they stick to. The Comedian is centered on historical events and the parts he did or didn’t play in them. Extremely violent and unforgiving while he carries out his missions. With Rorschach, it’s all about what he does during the day and how it leads to his night time excursions. It’s full of the guttural journal entries that we’ve all come to enjoy. A great read from the Before Watchmen series.

The Secret History Of D.B. Cooper

The Secret History Of D.B. Cooper

D.B. Cooper extorted $200,000, parachuted out of a plane and was never seen again. Find out what lead up to these events and who the man really was. An Oni Press title written and illustrated by Brian Churilla (We Kill Monsters, BlackAcre).

D.B. Cooper is famous for his well known getaway from a plane. What people don’t know about him, would make him even more famous. He works for the C.I.A. as an assassin but an assassin who can physically enter people’s minds. Going into a trance he is able to transfer his essence into his target and kill them from the inside of their head.

Very interesting series. Firstly because of the namesake of Cooper and secondly because of the whole C.I.A. mind assassin thing. Artwork is gritty and full of strange creatures, give it a try.
