Saga, Volume 1

Saga, Volume 1

Saga is exactly what it calls itself; given the scope and range of its tale it could be no less.

At times, it seems as though Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples have not only thrown in the kitchen sink, but scooped out the garburator and pipes below. However, what seems a head-on collision between Warhammer, Starcraft, and Shadowrun reveals layers of interaction and a lot of thought behind its dizzying array of characters, factions, and locales. Blasters and organically grown spaceships, sorcery, robots, and ghosts all meet in the convergent chaos of its universe. Jarring at first, as the story reveals itself it is no longer so, the seemingly disparate bits build coherent bytes, growing in detail and interconnection.

With so many dishes spinning, it will be interesting to see how it unfolds in future. Sometimes difficult to categorize, if required to render classify it in a single phrase space opera would be closest — but not quite adequate.

Y The Last Man Volume 1 Unmanned

With Under The Dome picking up steam, now seems like a good time to take a look at Y The Last Man. Before he started working on Under The Dome, Brian K. Vaughan (X-Men, Swamp Thing) wrote a series with artist Pia Guerra (Doctor Who: The Forgotten) for Vertigo called Y The Last Man.

Yorick Brown was a man, no more no less. When all the men in the world died at the same time he became the only one left. Now he is the most sought after commodity in the world once someone realizes he is alive. The world has been thrown into chaos with governments collapsing, people rioting and everyday life in disarray. With all this and the fact that Yorick is the only man left ask yourself, would you want to be the last man on Earth?

What an awesome series it goes all over the place. Satisfying story, the conspiracy of how it happened, the structure of society and of course secret government groups. It’s an extremely satisfying read that I dare you to not enjoy.

The Hood Blood From Stones

The Hood Blood From Stones

The story of a petty criminal and how he happened upon a hood with special powers.  A Marvel MAX imprint written by Brian K. Vaughan (Y:The Last Man, Runaways) and illustrated by Kyle Hotz (The Nightman, Incredible Hulk).

Parker Robbins is a good guy who just happens to be a criminal, like his father. With a pregnant wife at home, a girl on the side  and his mother’s medical bills, he’s gonna need a steady cash flow. During a robbery something unexpected happens, he is attacked by a demon. A fight ensues and Parker kills the demon, leaving behind a hood and boots. Soon he will find out the dark powers behind these items.

Very interesting story, good mix of supernatural and crime. Thanks to it being on MAX imprint the serious and dark tone of being a criminal is not held back.
