Avengers Disassembled

Avengers Disassembled

This is the series that started it all. The Marvel Universe as we know it has it’s roots in this ground breaking story. Brian Michael Bendis (Daredevil, Powers) with art by David Finch (Brightest Day, Dark Knight), have weaved a story with lasting consequences that is still felt.

This series ending storyline, at time, caused a huge outcry when it was first released in the monthly comic form. Many long time Avengers fans were outraged that Marvel decided to end their beloved comic series. Scarlet Witch has a nervous breakdown and with her reality altering powers has conjured up an all out attack on the Avengers leaving many casualties in the aftermath. The lasting effects of this series is still felt in the Marvel Universe.

A definite must read for anyone is getting into Marvel Comics. This story is what cemented Brian Michael Bendis as the top dog at Marvel. Dramatic, exciting, and above all, a wild roller coaster ride that you wish would never end and when it does leaves you craving for more! If more is what you want, then I would recommend you rush out to pick up New Avengers Vol 1 (2005).

Marvel Comics New Avengers Vol 1 Breakout TP

The aftermath of Avengers Disassembled have left Avengers Mansion in ruins and the team in disarray. Now life must go on without comrades who have fallen and a surprising event awaits them.   Brian Michael Bendis  (Daredevil, Ultimate Spider-man) creates his first Marvel series with artwork done by David Finch (Dark Knight, Ultimatum).

This story directly continues from the Avengers Finale and is the aftermath of the events that occurred in the Avengers Disassembled storyline. With Avengers Mansion destroyed and Tony Stark no longer willing to continue funding for the Avengers, the Avengers have disbanded. Steve Rogers, Captain America, is disillusioned by the events that have occurred but is unwilling to accept it. After all, a leader without a team to lead is no leader at all.  This leads him to try to revive Avengers by recruit old and new members which includes Wolverine and Spider-man are met with much skepticism. Unknown to Rogers and the other potential members is that events are slowing unfolding that will soon have the world needing the Avengers once again.

I have to say that I was still in shock from the events that happened in Avengers Disassembled when this new series came out. Nevertheless, I had to try to go on with life just as Steve Rogers did. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I read the first issue but as the events unfolded in future issues, sure was glad I continue reading it. This series and Avengers Disassembled directly lead into the House of M storyline.  Anyone who wants to read the current Avengers titles MUST read this title as a prerequisite. It is here where Brian Michael Bendis begins to weave his stories that will change the Marvel Universe for years to come. The artwork by David Finch wasn’t too bad either.

House of M

House of M

Written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Oliver Coipel, Bendis creates a world where everything you ever known about the Marvel Universe has been thrown out the window.

Following the events of Avengers Disassembled and the New Avengers launched in 2004, House of M is the aftermath of Scarlet Witch losing it and creating her own reality where everyone gets the life they always wanted.  This is a Marvel Universe where Magneto is the ruler of all mutants, Peter Parker is hailed as a upstanding citizen, Hulk is treated like a king and for some reason Wolverine is hooked up with Mystique.

Great story for those of you who always wonder if things worked out differently. Especially with Magneto ruling with a iron fist. House of M sets the stage all the major events in the Marvel Universe in the past decade!

Secret Invasion

Secret Invasion

This is a Marvel series of epic proportions.  An invasion by the Skrull race is imminent and it seems like the war will be over before it even starts. This Marvel event is written by Brian Michael Bendis (The Mighty Avengers, Sam and Twitch) and illustrated by Leinil Yu (X-Men, Wolverine).

The Earth is in grave danger but no one knows yet. Tony Stark has made a startling discovery.  The woman he thought was Elektra turned out to be a Skrull. Somehow this Skrull has the ability to shape-shift that is completely undetectable to mutant powers, magic powers and technology. Knowing this is only beginning. Tony ask the two smartest people on the planet, Hank Pym and Reed Richards, for help but with the possibility that anyone is a Skrull, who can they trust?

Another one of the big Marvel crossovers, everyone is affected by the invasion. You never really know who is themselves and with no hints, you only find out when they want you to. With tons of twists and turns, you really get addicted once you start reading as it seems utterly hopeless for the heroes of Earth. If you want to know about the aftermath of Secret Invasion, check out the Dark Reign titles.

Siege

Siege

It’s a war between the superhero’s of earth and the gods of Asgard. A Marvel Comic event written by Brian Michael Bendis (The New Avengers, Daredevil) and illustrated by Olivier Coipel (The Legion, Avengers).

Asgard now exists on earth floating above Broxton, Oklahoma. This doesn’t sit well with Norman Osbourn, who goes all the way to the President. He tries to convince him to declare war on the Asgardians but is shot down. After seeking his help, Loki helps Norman create his justification for war. What ensues is an all out war between Earth and the Asgardians.

Decent story, not the best but has a couple events with serious lasting consequences. As usual with these big story lines a ton of different people are involved. If you’ve enjoyed previous marvel events like Civil War or Avengers Disassembled give this a try.
