Avatar, The Last Airbender:he Promise

Avatar, The Last Airbender: The Promise

For fans of the show who can never get enough Avatar this is a welcome edition. Dark Horse brings back Aang and team Avatar as if they never left, with the help of author Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese, Level Up) and artist team Gurihiru (Fantastic Four, Spiderman).

Zuko is now the Fire Lord and ruling is never as easy as it seems. With the war over, now is the perfect time to spread peace. The harmony restoration movement is there for just that reason, to return Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom back to their people. A seemingly easy task but with many unforeseeable consequences.

Instantly, you are drawn back in to everything you love about Avatar. Aang with his words of wisdom and moments of complete childlessness. The stern but lovable Toph Bei Fong and the continuation of her own creation-metal bending. Sokka, the loyal maker of plans and catchphrases. The wonderfully bright and warm coloring prepares you for that happy, tingly feeling that you only get from the world of Avatar. It’s good to be back.

Orchid Volume 1

Rage Against The Machine in comic form? Almost. Tom Morello is the guitarist from Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, and his solo acoustic act The Nightwatchman. He decided to write a comic series at Dark Horse with Scott Hepburn (Sentinel, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) doing the illustrations.

One day, the sea levels rose and the earth as we knew it changed. Animals changed on a genetic level becoming bigger, more ferocious, and the dominant species. The high grounds became the safest place to live but belonged to the rich and powerful. Those poor who wished to live within their safety became slaves. The rest try their best to live freely in towns under bridges, staying as safe as possible from the untamed wild and the wrath of their masters up high.

This series shows you how quickly we revert back to the strong dominating the weak. With the world taken over by lush forests and overgrowth each page is a delight to look at. All you want is for them to go all over the world to see how the earth has changed. Tom has written an amazing story and no matter what your political/world view you should just appreciate for what it is. A great story!

Avatar, The Last Airbender: The Search,Part One

It’s the one question that was left unanswered and deliberately teased at the end of the TV series. We all want to know what happened to Zuko’s mom. Dark Horse Comics has finally decided now is the time to answer that question. Who better to tell this story than the guys from the last series (Avatar: The Promise), writer Gene Luen Yang ( Loyola Chin and the San Peligran Order, American Born Chinese) and artist team Gurihiru (Wolverine: First Class, Hulk: World War Hulks).

Now that things have settled down in the Earth Kingdom for Fire Lord Zuko, he can turn his attention to more personal matters. Namely, what happened to his mother and where she is. With his father being the only person who knows the truth about her, there is only one other person who is able to help him. His sister, Azula, might be the only person who can help Zuko find their mother — if she can be trusted.

This book is great. It’s nice to see the flashbacks of Ursa throughout the story. It gives you a sense of what kind of person she was and how she came to be married to Ozai.  The book is setting up the next two; when you get to the end it’s just getting into the swing of things. It just makes me even more excited for the next two parts. I can’t wait!!

The Creep

The Creep

A detective must take on an unfortunate case from a former lover. Will he be able to solve the case? A somber tale from Dark Horse written by John Arcudi (Major Bummer, Doom Patrol) and illustrated by Jonathan Case (House Of Night, Batman ’66).

Oxel is a private detective who has had a hard life. Unfortunately for him he has a facial disfigurement which brings him unwanted stares from children and insults from unruly teens. One day he receives a letter from an old friend whom he hasn’t seen in 20 years. The letter describes how her son has committed suicide and that she needs his help to find out why. A comic about how our experiences shape where out futures lie.

This is not a feel good story but one about tragedy and how we go through it. It’s a compelling story, you become very invested in Oxel and the fate of the children. The illustrations are like being in sad, noir pulp style Archie world. If you are looking for a serious read then give The Creep a try.

Exile To Babylon

In the future the rules have changed, to stop criminals we must use criminals. How could things possibly go wrong? See what the future holds in this Dark Horse title written by David Lapham and illustrated by Patric Reynolds.

The year is 2040 and the world is not what it used to be. Gas is at an all time low with most people having only enough to get to work and back. With crime on the rise a new group called The Blackshield Angel’s have taken to the streets. They consist of former criminals who had a choice, go to jail or join Blackshield. When a fuel supply is taken over by criminals it will take Blackshield’s top agent to bring them down.

I had high hopes for this series, artwork was appealing and the first issue got me hooked. But, after I read the whole book I was extremely disappointed. Despite enjoying the artwork many of the criminals were hard to tell apart. The idea for the future world is never properly explored just explained enough so you know whats going on. When it comes to advancing the plot, it seems they just go to places with out explaining how and why they are there. Don’t take my word for it though as it may be your cup of tea.

The Goon Volume 1 Nothin But Misery

The Goon Volume 1 Nothin But Misery

The Goon’s world is like a 1950’s mobster movie but with zombies, giant octopuses and other strange creatures. Eric Powell (The Hood, Incredible Hulk) has written and illustrated The Goon for Dark Horse with his own distinctive style.

The Goon and his buddy Franky are the muscle for their boss Labrazio who runs the city. If someone messes with Labrazio, owes him money or try’s anything you can guarantee that the Goon and Franky will be there to sort things out. But, the city is the changing and new players are starting to take over their turf. It’s the zombie priest and his army of undead.

This is a really fun comic, it doesn’t take itself to seriously and that is what makes it so great. The main characters are a mix of tough and goofy doling out beatings like candy. The artwork is bright and vibrant which adds to the fun beat-em up nature of the comic. When it comes down to it this comic is a good time that will have you laughing page after page.

City Of Others

City Of Others

Zombies and vampires seem to be popping up together more and more these days. City Of Others is one such comic from Dark Horse. Written by Steve Niles (Simon Dark, 30 Days Of Dark) and Bernie Wrightson (Creepy, Batman: The Cult) with Bernie doing the illustrations as well.

Blud is a killer for hire and he is good at his job. Feeling no emotions about those he kills is what makes him so ruthless. During a job he runs into a problem, they won’t die. Following some clues he finds a group of what can only be rationalized as zombies. They lead him to a house in the middle of nowhere. From there it only gets weirder, it’s full of vampires. Now all that’s left for him is to make sense of the situation he’s in.

The back story between the zombies and vampires is really compelling. It practically begs for a prequel. As full of blood and guts as it is plot. At first glance it may look like a simple versus comic but it is so much more.
