Superman The Black Ring

Superman The Black Ring

An awesome series that is all about Lex Luthor and his strive for more power. A great DC series written by Paul Cornell (Saucer Country, Demon Knights) and illustrated by Pete Woods (Legion Lost).

This series is filled with interesting side characters such as Gorilla Grodd and a Robo-Lois. It also takes an in-depth look at the psych of Lex during a near death experience. Tons of stuff here for anyone looking for more on Lex Luthor.

Comic Review: Batman Incorporated (2012), Volume 1: Demon Star

Batman Incorporated (2012), Volume 1: Demon Star

Batman Incorporated (2012), Volume 1: Demon Star

Batman Incorporated is written Grant Morrison (Batman, New X-men, JLA) with artwork by Chris Burham (The Armory War).

Demon Star begins after the end original Batman Incorporated (2010) series. Batman and Robin, Damian, must lead a fight against Talia Al Ghul who attempting to take over Gotham City with an army of Leviathan agents. To add to the escalating problem, Talia has placed a bounty on her son, Damian.

Unlike the original Batman Incorporated series that was set prior to the new 52 relaunch,  this new series does not focus on the group of “Batmen” Bruce has assembled but more on Batman and Robin. The Batman Incorporated team is more of  a side characters in this series.  Fans of Damian as Robin will definitely like this series as he is the main focal point of this series. This first story arc is excellent and definitely gets you hooked from the start and craving for more!

One other book you probably might want to read to bridge the gap between the first series and the second series is Batman Leviathan Strikes – One Shot.

This first volume of Batman Incorporated is available in both Softcover and Hardcover

Comic Review: Batman The Killing Joke

Batman The Killing Joke

Batman The Killing Joke

An origin story about the joker who is trying to break the will of a good man–Commisoner James Gordon. An iconic DC title written by Alan Moore (The Watchmen, V For Vendetta) and illustrated by Brian Bolland (Animal Man, Wonder Woman).

Batman goes to see the Joker in the hopes of trying to get through to him. This of course fails and later the Joker escapes once again. He takes over a run down amusement park and begins to make some changes. Commisoner Gordon is captured and tortured by the Joker. Bringing him back to the amusement park Gordon is forced to sit through a specially made ride of hellish proportions, just for him. With this, Joker hopes to prove his point–we are all just on bad day away from becoming like him.

Another game changer in the Batman universe. Not only do we get to see how the Joker came to be, we also understand more about why he does these things. You will definitely fell a little sick during some points of this comic. Try to imagine yourself in Gordon’s shoes. A must have for any Batman fan. Also if you want your mind blown check out Grant Morrison’s opinion on the ending.

Comic Review: Batman Broken City

Batman Broken City

Batman Broken City

It’s a noir style Batman story that has the perfect kind of grit that Brian Azzarello (Loveless, 100 Bullets) and Eduardo Risso (Spaceman, 100 Bullets) have come to be known. Their usual style transfers quite well into the world of Batman.

A murder takes place in Gotham City with a dead woman found in the dump. With the body partially eaten, it fits the profile of Killer Croc. When confronted Croc points out that there is no real evidence and that Batman can’t do anything about it. This sends the Bat all over town putting him at odds with such people as the Penguine, Scarface and others. Will he find the killer or will this become another unsolved crime.

This world has a very dark and scary feel to it. It really is noir style, with the violence much more visually brutal. At times, the story can be confusing and you can feel lost.  If you like Brian and Eduardo than this is a good, quick read.

Comic Review: Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come

Kingdom Come

This DC book really got me into reading comics. It’s the story of how after Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the older superheros quit, the present generation heroes are faced with the blurred line between right and wrong.Writer, Mark Waid (Incorruptible, Daredevil) and artist, Alex Ross (Astro City, Universe X), tell this story.

The superheroes that fight to save people have lost their way. They’re more concerned with destroying their enemies than saving the lives of the people in danger. Superman has been retired for some time but still keeps an eye on the world. One day, he can no longer let things continue down its current path.  His intervention and presence brings out the heroes of the  old. With these actions, a rift in ideals is created that challenges the status quo.

The story delves into what truly makes a superhero. Is it just fighting evil at any cost or is it more than that. Being that this is in the future, you get to see how age has changed some of your favorite heroes. You may be surprised to see how some have changed.

Latest News: DC Comics moves HQ from the Big Apple to California Sunshine!

Latest News: DC Comics moves HQ from the Big Apple to California Sunshine!

DC Comics is packing their bags and moving from the East Coast to the West Coast.  In 2009, Warner Bros Studios took over operations of DC Comics and renamed it DC Entertainment. The film, television, video games, consumer products and administration of the company moved over to Burbank, California back in 2010 with the publishing arm still operating in New York. The publishing arm of DC Entertainment move is planned to be sometime in April 2015. Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment, states the move is to consolidate the company and promote greater transparency within the company. DC Comics has had their publishing operations since it’s inception back in 1936  as National Periodicals.

Behind the scene, this move is probably long overdue since most of the revenue from DC Entertainment is from their films and television properties and  since Warner Bros Studios is based in Burbank. As well, the bulk of current crop of creative talent is based out in the West Coast. I wonder how long it would be before Marvel would move its HQ over to the West Coast as well since Marvel Studios and Disney are both based out of California.

Comic Review: Preacher Volume 1 Gone To Texas

Preacher Volume 1 Gone To Texas

Preacher Volume 1 Gone To Texas

I love a comic that is really f’d up and weird, but at the same time has a story that is deep, very complex and highly interesting. Preacher just happens to be such a comic. Who else but Garth Ennis (The Boys, Punisher:MAX) and Steve Dillon (Hellblazer, Judge Dredd) and where else but Vertigo of course!

Reverend Jesse Custer was a priest living in a small town full of hypocritical church goers. One Sunday during a heated sermon he was struck with the spirit of some heavenly being. Now filled with the power of this spirit he has one mission. Find god and make him pay for all the hell the people of this world have been put through.

This book has so much going for it. A sprawling story through the entirety of its run that goes to so many interesting locations. Main characters with so many flaws you find yourself yelling at the pages “why are you doing that”. With an array of supporting characters, you want to know everything about their lives. So many crazy things that you keep wondering how it’s possible to get weirder–but it does.

Comic Review: Batman Arkham Asylum A Serious House On Serious Earth

Batman Arkham Asylum A Serious House On Serious Earth

Batman Arkham Asylum A Serious House On Serious Earth

An in depth look into Arkham Asylum and the mentally unbalanced patients who dwell with in. This ground breaking title from DC is written by Grant Morrison (The Invisibles, Batman Inc.) and illustrated by Kevin McKean (Violent Cases, Black Orchid).

The inmates of Arkham Asylum have taken over the building and are demanding one thing–Batman. The leader of the group is Joker, who gives Batman one hour to escape before the inmates are sent to hunt him. A dark take on the psychology of these patients including Two-Face, Mad Hatter and Clayface amongst many others.

This series really changed the way we looked at many of Batman’s adversaries. Rather than just being “the bad guys”, they are people with legitimately unstable mental thought processes. The artwork takes this idea with illustrations straight out someone’s bad dreams. It leaves you with a sense of dread and apprehension. Be sure to check this out, especially if you’re a fan of Grant Morrison.
