All Star Batman & Robin The Boy Wonder Volume 1
If Superman All-Star made you think of him in a brighter light, this has the opposite affect for Batman. Here he is brutal, arrogant, one minded and a little mean but it makes for a damn fine story. Frank Miller (300, Sin City) and illustrator Jim Lee (Justice League, World Of Warcraft) tell the story of a bit more intense Batman & Robin.
A re-imagining of how Batman and Dick Grayson first met. One night during a performance of the Flying Graysons, Dick’s parents are murdered. Ushered away by bent GCPD officers, Batman saves him before anything happens. Whisked away to the Bat Cave, Batman tells him he has been drafted into a war. Soon he will become Robin but with everything that has happened, can he cope?
This series has drawn a bit of criticism. A lot of that is directed at the fact that Batman seems to really enjoy all the violence. I say take this book for what it is, a writer trying to have fun with a much loved icon. As the lead character himself would say,”I love being the goddamn Batman.”
