Comic Review: Batman Broken City

Batman Broken City

Batman Broken City

It’s a noir style Batman story that has the perfect kind of grit that Brian Azzarello (Loveless, 100 Bullets) and Eduardo Risso (Spaceman, 100 Bullets) have come to be known. Their usual style transfers quite well into the world of Batman.

A murder takes place in Gotham City with a dead woman found in the dump. With the body partially eaten, it fits the profile of Killer Croc. When confronted Croc points out that there is no real evidence and that Batman can’t do anything about it. This sends the Bat all over town putting him at odds with such people as the Penguine, Scarface and others. Will he find the killer or will this become another unsolved crime.

This world has a very dark and scary feel to it. It really is noir style, with the violence much more visually brutal. At times, the story can be confusing and you can feel lost.  If you like Brian and Eduardo than this is a good, quick read.

100 Bullets, Volume 1: First Shot, Last Call

Vertigo is one of my favorite publishers because they are always guaranteed to put out new and exciting ongoing series — 100 bullets rightly falls into that category. With a writer like Brian Azzarello (Wonder Woman, Hellblazer) and artist Eduardo Risso (Spaceman, Logan) teaming up, the results will be something to spectacular.

You’re minding your own business and an older gentlemen gets your attention. He shows you a briefcase and explains its contents. Inside is a gun, 100 bullets and a folder. In that folder is proof of a wrong done against you and the chance to take revenge.  The gun and bullets are untraceable. If you are caught by the police upon finding those items they will give them back and let you go. It’s up to you if you decide to take revenge or not. As for the old mans motives — that’s a story for another time.

The writing sounds like a conversation you might over hear at some dive bar or walking through a dark alley at night. The images feel dark and desperate, which adds different dimensions to each character. You see the despair on one person’s whole being opposed to the privileged aura of another.

Comic Review: Spaceman

Spaceman

Spaceman

The dynamic duo of Brian Azzarello (Tales Of The Unexpected, Deathblow) and Eduardo Risso (Logan, Alien Resurected) are back again to bring you Vertigo’s Spaceman. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, it’s the story of one man’s time in space and how he lives his life here on Earth.

Orson spends his days salvaging for scrap and the money he makes is spent on drugs and computer sex. When his mind isn’t preoccupied he thinks back to his days exploring the surfaces of Mars with his genetic brothers. Orson is not a man but a genetically engineered being created to sustain long flights in space. But, when their program is shut down he must live a life of little importance. It’s not until he happens upon a well known celebrity who has been kidnapped, that his life takes a drastic change

As with 100 bullets it may take some time before you see the whole picture of whats going on. Risso’s artistic style is the perfect thing for a grimy apocalyptic future. They have a cool take on how some people speak using abbreviations and internet lingo. Great thing about the ending is there are a few ways to look at it. Check out the web for people’s opinions, it might just blow your mind.

Comic Review: Jonny Double

Jonny Double

Jonny Double

This is the comic that brought Brain Azzarello (Wonder Woman, Deathblow) and Eduardo Risso (Spaceman, Vamps) together for the very first time. Jonny Double from Vertigo is what eventually lead to 100 Bullets.

Jonny Double is a down on his luck aging private investigator. He’s barely getting by with the money he makes and his latest client turned up dead. His luck may be turning around on his next job though. The girl he is being paid to keep tabs on has told him of a 5 figure heist. It’s guaranteed to be a walk in the park. But with everything going so well, can it really be that easy?

I find that with the artwork of Risso you can get the faces mixed up from time to time. If you’ve read 100 Bullets you will defiantly see some characters that started out in this series. Not the same people exactly but their essence and looks. A quick read that will be enjoyed all the more knowing how far Azzarello and Risso have come since.
