Image Comics Sidekick #1

Captain America had Bucky. Batman had Robin. Scooby Doo had Shaggy and Bullwinkle had Rocky.  What do these heroes all have in common, sidekicks!  Now can you imagine what happens to the sidekick once the main hero is gone?

J Michael Straczynski’s (Amazing Spider-man, Midnight Nation) newest series, Sidekick, explores how sidekick, Flyboy, deals with the aftermath of the assassination of Cowl, a beloved hero of the masses. Already well known as a writer who thinks outside the realm traditional comic book storytelling,  Straczynski  has crafted a well written story with twists and turns reminiscence of a roller coaster ride.  The artwork is by Tom Mandrake (Swamp Thing, Grimjack).  Judging by the first issue, this series is definitely living up to the reputation of Straczynski rock solid hits. I can’t wait till issue 2 when it comes out!

Happy! Volume 1

Happy! Volume 1

What do an aging hit-man and an imaginary flying horse have in common. They are both in Image Comic’s Happy! written by Grant Morrison (X-Men, The Invisibles) and illustrated by Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan, The New Warriors).

Nick Sax is an ex-cop turned hit-man. Finishing up a job, he heads out for the usual–booze and pills. This takes a turn for the worse when he is attacked and lands in the hospital. He wakes up to a blue flying horse named Happy, buzzing around his head.  He tells Nick that he is bugging him for a reason. Nick is the only one who can save the life of a little girl.

Grant is having all kinds of fun with this series. Bent cops, disgusting perverts, liberal violence and imaginary friends. Funny comic with a bit of a dark tone.

Battle Pope Volume 1 Genesis

Battle Pope Volume 1 Genesis

The pope, Jesus, heaven, hell and corporations are all parts of a great comic book. Image Comic’s series written by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Thief of Thieves) and illustrated by Tony Moore (Fear Agent, Venom).

God was pretty unhappy with the people of Earth so he decided to open the gates of hell. Years of war raged on until a treaty was reached between human kind and demons. Now they live together on Earth, with some demons even starting a corporation–Hellcorp. Keeping watch over humankind, god calls on the Pope. He enlists his help and is sent back to earth with his son Jesus. Together they can manage any threat coming their way.

God damn hilarious, cool concept and blasphemous as hell. Nuff said, go forth and read this series, so sayeth the lord.

Who Is Jake Ellis

Who Is Jake Ellis

Interesting tale of a man who is being guided by a mysterious voice.  Image comic series written by Nathan Edmondson (Dancer, Grifter)  and illustrated by Tonci Zonjic (Heralds, Marvel Divas).

Jon Moore is a man on the run hunted by unknown enemies. He does have one wild card–Jake Ellis. A man only Jon can see. Whenever he is in trouble Jake will tell him where his attackers are, how many, where to go and what to do. Somehow he is always one step ahead of his attackers. Suspenseful right from the get go, it’s easy to see why this series was constantly sold out when it first shipped. You will definitely not put this book down once you start.

Comic Review: Fell Volume 1 Feral City

Fell Volume 1 Feral City

Fell Volume 1 Feral City

A truly creepy and uneasy tale of rampant crime and chaos from Warren Ellis (Planetary, DV8) and artist Ben Templesmith (Wasteland, Wormwood:Gentleman Corpse) in this comic from Image.

A city that gives you the sense that not all is right in the world. Especially in the place known as Snowtown. This is where homicide detective Richard Fell has been sent after messing up a case back home. Along with the 3 and a half other police officers, it’s up to Fell to deal with this diseased city.

The paneling of this comic was designed to give the reader more bang for their buck. So each page is 9 panels. The panels and artwork along side each other show the bizarre nature of the people and their city. I will warn you that the series is on hiatus after 9 issues. It is possible that it will start up again this year but don’t hold your breath.

Morning Glories Volume 1 For A Better Future

Morning Glories Volume 1 For A Better Future

Very ambitious comic about a school that houses the smartest students from around the world. They have as many secrets as they do students. An Image series written by Nick Spencer (Iron Man 2.0, Ultimate Comics X-Men) and illustrated by Joe Eisma (Cobra, Higher Earth).

Six new students have just come to Morning Glory Academy. From the beginning things do not seem normal. During an orientation there are flashing images of a butchered lame. One of the students becomes emotionally unstable and tries stab one of the new students. Even stranger, when one of them calls home, her father claims not to know or even have a daughter. What is the purpose of this school and why does it need these students?

This series is chalk full of mystery and intrigue. By the end the first issue you will be hooked no doubts about it. I will say this, there are so many twists and turns you should read this series in one go. I put it down for a month and had to re-read from the beginning again.

Comic Review: The Walking Dead, Volume 1: Days Gone Bye

The Walking Dead, Volume 1: Days Gone Bye

The Walking Dead, Volume 1: Days Gone Bye

If you’ve seen the show but haven’t started the comic you are definitely one lucky person for all the things that lie ahead. The Walking Dead is published by Image Comics, written by Robert Kirkman (Battle Pope, Marvel Zombies) and drawn by Tony Moore (The Exterminators, Punisher).

Waking up all alone we find Rick Grimes confused and scared in a hospital full of zombies. This is the beginning of an apocalyptic tale of survival that shows us the consequences of our actions.

Normally I’m not a big fan of black and white but I find my self really drawn to the detailed artwork. If it ended up in color I think it would have been too much of a good thing. Kirkman as always dishes out the dialogue in a way that makes zombies a side note in favor of what the people are going through. It’s the end of the world — expect people to act accordingly.

Comic Review: The Strange Talent Of Luther Strode

The Strange Talent Of Luther Strode

The Strange Talent Of Luther Strode

When you were in high school didn’t you wish that you could become big and strong in an instant? This Image comic written by Justin Jordan (Shadowman, Team 7) and illustrated by Tradd Moore (Deadpool, Legends Of the Dark Knight), is about a teenager who orders something from the back of a magazine that actually works.

Luther Strode was a normal, kinda nerdy teenager who gets bullied at school. Wanting a change, he orders an exercise book from the back of an old comic. The workouts seem to work instantly. Taking him from a scrawny geek, to the jacked kid at school you don’t want to mess with. But, there is more to this book than Luther knows and soon he will find out.

Great series that is more than it seems, not just a simple beat’em up storyline. Great artwork of people’s bodies being eviscerated. Another great new series from Image.
