Kick-Ass 2, Prelude: Hit-Girl

Kick-Ass 2, Prelude: Hit-Girl

Kick-Ass is awesome but you all know the best part about this series is little girls! No, I mean a little girl! Umm — that still doesn’t sound right. Hit-Girl is the man — if a man could kick as much ass as a little girl trained from childhood to take down mobsters. Icon Comics brings the pain again with everyone’s favorite (well, maybe not everyone) Mark Miller (Wanted, Sin City) and artist John Romita Jr. (World War Hulk, Eternals).

The writing flows alongside the artist’s illustrations. It’s more of what you want to see: high-school kids dressing up and trying to patrol the streets, Red Mist still working his way up to becoming a super-villain, Kick-Ass doing his best to learn all he can from Hit-Girl — with plenty of witty banter. Hit-Girl doing what we like most: beating the hell out of people and killing them all while trying to be a regular high school student. Bullets, beat-em ups and bloodied bodies — it’s what you look for in a Kick-Ass comic and it delivers!

Comic Review: Marvel Comics Civil War

Marvel Comics Civil War TP Cover

Marvel Comics Civil War TP Cover

Civil War is a 7 part issue mini series featuring writing by Mark Millar (Wolverine, Ultimates, JLA) and artwork by Steve McNiven (CrossGen’s Mystic, Marvel Knights 4, Wolverine).

Following the events of House of M and Decimation, the US Government unanimously agreed to enact Superheroes Registration Act after the New Warriors filming a reality show end up causing an explosion created by Nitro which ended up blowing a neighbourhood killing 612 people including children.

The Superheroes Registration Act requires all heroes that are superpowered or non-superpowered to register with the US Government thereby also requiring them to reveal their identities as well.   Failure to do so will result in the person being deemed a criminal.

The Act causes a huge rift between all the heroes in Marvel Universe with those who are opposed to the Act lead by Captain America and those who are for the Act lead by Iron Man.

The story is well written with lots of twists and turns as you would expect from Mark Millar. Steve McNiven’s artwork is great. A must read for those who are just getting into Marvel Comics as it sets up many of the major events in the Marvel Universe in the last 8 years!

Civil War is available in 7 single issues, tradepaperback and hardcover

Comic Review: Nemesis

Nemesis

Nemesis

Imagine that Bruce Wayne decided to take everything that he learned and put all this knowledge towards being evil and murderous just for kicks. Mark Millar (Sin City, Civil War) is back again with artist Steven McNiven (Wolverine: Old Man Logan, Marvel Knights) and have brought Nemesis to Icon.

Blake Morrow is a detective who has been picked to die. Nemesis has come into town following his usual M.O., he picks a law enforcement agent best suited to fight against him. This is usually followed by the death and destruction of said agent. With his life on the line will Blake be able survive or will he become one of the many left dead in the path of Nemesis.

This series is a fun cat and mouse between Nemesis and Blake Morrow. The action is intense and the deaths are awesomely bloody. Only down side is that it’s a quick read so just as your are getting into it’s over. But fear not this September Nemesis two is coming out.

Comic Review: Wolverine Enemy Of The State

Wolverine Enemy Of The State

Wolverine Enemy Of The State

What happens when Wolverine goes bad? Worse, what happens when Wolverine is under the control of someone else? Frank Miller (300, Holy Terror) and artist John Romita JR. (Kick-Ass, Sentry) show us what happens when Wolverine is a pawn in a very violent game.

Tricked into going to Japan, Wolverine is defeated by an enemy that he doesn’t even see coming. Waking up in a S.H.E.I.L.D. infirmary, he has the overwhelming urge to kill. Unable to control his actions he murders his way out. He is now under the control of H.Y.D.R.A. and is an unrelenting killing machine. What is it that they want with Wolverine and if possible, who can stop him?

An enjoyably long and well thought out story line. It’s nice to see Wolverine kill rather than just knock out guys. Also there are serious repercussions during his time as a mind control victim, that he will regret later.

Comic Review: Superior

Superior

Superior

When you were a kid didn’t you use to wish you could become your favorite superhero. What if that wish came true? What would you do? Well that’s exactly what Icon answers with Superior from Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass) and artist Leinil Yu (The New Avengers, X-Men).

Simon was just like every other 12 year old kid until the day he got multiple sclerosis. Every night he wished he would get better, until one night he did. He woke up to find a being in his room who granted him one wish. He chose to become his favorite superhero Superior. Now he is the opposite of everything he was.

Experiencing everything through a child’s eyes gives being a superhero a new feel. The characters are easy to relate to and you find yourself thinking that at one point or another you could be that person. For such a simple and seemingly straight forward storyline there’s an awesome twist that just adds a whole new dimension to story.

Comic Review: Wanted

Wanted

Wanted

Hopefully you haven’t seen the wanted movie, mainly for two reasons. It’s SH*T or so I’ve heard never seen it don’t need to. The other reason–this comic rules. When you read this book you will understand why they couldn’t make the movie truer to the story. Mark Millar (The Authority, The Secret Service) and artist JG Jones (Y The Last Man, Before Watchmen: Comedian) have put together a comic at Top Cow that asks the question, don’t you want to bad?

Wesley Gibson is a loser and he knows it. His girlfriend is screwing his best friend. Everyday he goes to the same dead end job and eats the same boring food. Yup loser. While going to lunch to get the same food again he is approached by a woman who tells him to come with her then proceeds to kill everyone in the shop. She explains that she is part of The Fraternity, they can shoot, kill, rape or destroy anyone without any consequences. Now it’s up to Wesley if he wants to join this elite group.

The story really takes the idea of being a bad guy through all the paces. From the training to alternate universes and even running the world. This is a really enjoyable comic and we are quite lucky to have the whole series in one go. It took two years for all 6 issues to come out so when you get to the last issue keep this in mind as it might have influenced the ending.

Comic Review: Supercrooks The Heist

Supercrooks The Heist

Supercrooks The Heist

Pulling the ultimate heist with the baddest super-criminals around, what could go wrong? An Icon title written by Mark Millar (Ultimate X-Men, Swamp Thing) and illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu (Wolverine, The New Avengers).

Johnny, a super-criminal, is fresh out of jail and it doesn’t take long before he is breaking the law again. His friend and mentor The Heat has racked up a 100 million dollar debt and he needs Johnny’s help. They decide to get their old friends back together and blackmail those who aren’t willing. The job is to steal from a man known as The Bastard–the worlds most feared supervillan.

Another Millar mini-series that’s going to be made into a movie. It’s easy to see why they picked this one as it transitions into a movie pretty easily. Heavy on the drama and suspense it makes a damn fine comic.

Comic Review: Kick-Ass

Kick-Ass

Kick-Ass

What would you do if you wanted to be a superhero? Would you spend all your days thinking about it or would you actually do it. Icon’s Kick-Ass, written by Mark Millar (Secret Service, Jupiter’s Legacy) and illustrated by John Romita JR. (Iron Man, Spider Man), asks just that question.

It’s hard being a teenager, knowing how to fit in, getting the girl and all that fun adolescent stuff. To Dave Lizewski that’s all well and good, what’s really important, is being a superhero. Too bad for him that’s when he tried to be one, he got the sh*t kicked out of him and got stabbed. But, that’s not going to stop Dave and pretty soon people are starting to recognize the masked vigilante known as Kick-Ass.

When it first came out this is series was unbelievably popular and it’s easy to see why. It’s a super fun comic that never takes itself seriously at all; over the top violence, vibrant artwork, ridiculous high school situations, great characters and of course, a child who commits murder. What’s there not to love about this comic. Personally, I like the comic book ending more than the one in the movie because hey, you don’t always need a happy ending.

Comic Review: Old Man Logan

Wolverine Old Man Logan

Wolverine Old Man Logan

Set 50 years in a future where the supervillans have won and Wolverine is a broken man. This Marvel title is written by Mark Millar (Secret Service, Kick-Ass) and illustrated by Steve McNiven (Meridian, The New Avengers).

Some time ago all the supervillans got together and eradicated the superheros. The world is now run by bad guys and any one who used to be good have long since abandoned any such idea. Wolverine lives a solitary life with his wife and kids but times are tough. Owing money to the family of Hulks, he reluctantly takes a job transporting a package across the country with Hawkeye.

Wow, wow, wow amazing series. The idea behind it is so rich with history that has yet to be explored. They could easily start an ongoing series of Old Man Logan. If you haven’t read this yet, you need to get on this.
