Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe

Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe

Has Deadpool finally lost his mind or are the voices in his head finally talking some sense. In this Marvel mini-series written by Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun) and illustrated by Dalibor Talajic (Deadworld, Hit-Monkey), Deadpool goes on an unparalleled killing spree.

Deadpool has always been a bit on the unstable side and so would you if you had voices talking to you. In an effort to help him get better the X-men have brought Deadpool to the Ravencroft asylum. The treatment is suppose to help him get ride of the voices in his head and they are successful. But, once the voices disappear, a new singular voice arises and it wants only one thing–for Deadpool to kill the Marvel universe.

A unexpectedly more serious and dark toned Deadpool comic. In it even he begins to question his own sanity. As you would expect it’s stocked full of gruesume and inventive deaths. It does take some special effort for some of these guys to die due to their superpowers. Great mini series that continues in Deadpool Killustrated.

The Punisher Volume 1

The Punisher Volume 1

This is the last solo series of the Punisher and in it something quite unexpected happens–he finds a partner. This Marvel series is written by Greg Rucka (Queen & Country, Wonder Woman) and illustrated by Marco Checchetto (Daredevil, Spider-Man).

A horribly tragic event takes place during a day that should be filled with blessings. A wedding is interupted by gun fire killing 30 of 31 people including the groom. The only survivor is U.S. Marine Sergeant Rachel Cole-Alves and she will not sit idly by. Soon her hunt for the killers of her husband and friends will cross paths with the Punisher.

A series that took a couple of issues before I really got behind it. After I did I began to appreciate what they were doing. A deep story line with many intersecting plots. Artwork that seems very real and expressive of emotions. Being that this was the last series, for now, we are very fortunate indeed.

Punisher Noir

Punisher Noir

Another series in the Marvel Noir line and this time around it’s the Punisher doling out his vigilante justice. This series is written by Frank Tieri (Weapon X, Iron Man) and illustrated by Paul Azaceta (Grounded, Daredevil).

It’s 1935 and Frank is waking up to start the day by turning the radio on. This is followed by getting his arsenal in order which is a couple of grenades, brass knuckles, knives and couple of pistols with skulls emblems on them. On the way out he grabs a mask with another skull on the front and puts it on. All the necessities needed for a day of vigilante justice 1935 style.

Great series and as usual with the Noir stories there are incarnations of their usual enemies. For the punisher I won’t say who but I was very happy to see they chose this person. Artwork really lends itself to the gritty street feel and the era they’re in. The punisher fits right at home in pre WW2. Do yourself a favor and check out this Noir title.

Marvel Comics Amazing Spider-man One More Day

Marvel Comics Amazing Spider-man One More Day

With his world slowing unraveling, Peter Parker must deal with a situation where his actions as a masked superhero has hurt someone close to him. J Michael Straczynski (Midnight Nation, Earth One Superman) and Joe Quesada (Daredevil) team up to tell this heart felt story of a man who has to find a way to save the one person who has been with him through everything.

Aunt May was critically injured during the Back in Black storyline during an attempt on Peter Parker’s life contracted by the Kingpin. This is a direct result of Parker revealing to the world that he is Spider-man. Now with Aunt May in the intensive care ward at the hospital and unable to keep up with the mounting bill. The hospital is giving an ultimatum. Pay the hospital bills for intensive care or they would have to transfer Aunt May to regular care where she may not survive her injuries. Parker is desperate to find a way to solve his money problems but at what cost?

Have you ever run into a situation where you have to try to do everything you can to save someone but no matter what you do, you can’t find a solution. Once I started reading this story, I couldn’t stop. The intensity and the feeling of desperation transfers from Peter Parker directly to you which makes you feel like you’re completely part of the story. I always have loved the JMS run on Amazing Spider-man and this story is no different. Marvel’s big boss, Joe Quesada, does a spectacular job on the artwork. This story directly leads into the Brand New Day story line.

A Vs X Consequences

A Vs X Consequences

Following the end of Avengers Vs. X-Men, Consequences deals with the aftermath of Scott Summers actions. This Marvel series is written by Kieron Gillen (Generation Hope, Journey Into Mystery) and illustrated by Tom Raney (Outsiders, Stormwatch)

The world is slowing picking up the pieces after the destruction caused by Phoenix Force. The Avengers are trying to track down those involved in the bloodshed but it’s proving difficult. As Cyclopes awaits trial in jail he shows little remorse. He believes that it is thanks to him that mutants are once again returning. It’s only a matter of time before he is killed for his actions or worse, he is able to escape.

There is a lot that is addressed during this series, the future of Hope, the public’s view of mutants and fate of the other Phoenix members. Now that Scott has time to think about what has happened we get to hear what he truly believes. The end of Consequences leads into Uncanny X-Men.

Comic Review: Wolverine Origin

Wolverine Origin

Wolverine Origin

Since the introduction of Wolverine in the 1970’s, everyone has wanted know his origin and it’s finally here. Does it live up to the hype or does it fail to meet your expectations. This much anticipated Marvel title is written by Paul Jenkins (Sentry, Peter Parker: Spider-man) with Bill Jemas and Joe Quesada and penciled by Andy Kubert (Ka-Zar, Captain America) with digital painting by Richard Isanove (Dark Tower, Daredevil).

Set in the late 19th century in Canada, the story is about the friendship of two boys from very different backgrounds. James Howlett is the son of a rich plantation owner and is constantly sick. To help aid this, James’s father hires an orphaned girl named Rose to take care of him. Dog Logan is the son of the Howlett’s groundskeeper, who is violent and often takes it out on Dog. Over the years their relationship becomes strained due to the animosity between their fathers.

Personally, I like this story because this is an example of how you are now is based on where you come from. The artwork feels very natural to the location and date. Story starts off pretty tame but things pick up quickly and you are in for quite a twist. It’s good that it’s not overly violent and concentrates more on the story. If you want to know where Wolverine came from, read Origin.

Wolverine The Best There Is The Complete Series

Wolverine The Best There Is The Complete Series

A completely messed up tale about everyone’s favorite X-Man that is ramped up with tons of violence and sex (well sex appeal). It’s Wolverine like you’ve never seen him before in this Marvel title written by Charlie Huston (Moon Knight, Deathlok) and illustrated by Juan Jose Ryp (No Hero, Lady Death).

Things aren’t too looking well for old Wolverine. First he is trapped and caged and then forced to be in a dog fight. Next he meets a beautiful women and the night seems alright until everyone starts to hallucinate and go crazy. Finally, he is once again captured and held captive, but it’s a lot worse this time around. He is pushed to his physical and mental breaking points. He is brought to and from the brink of death over and over again. Is there a point to all of this or is it just for the pleasure of the pain?

Now, this is a series that it’s either love or hate. Yes, there is a plot and you do want to know why this is happening but getting there might lose you. Everything they do is super over the top grotesque violence. If that’s not your thing then you won’t enjoy this, but if it is, come, sit, read and enjoy.

New X-Men Volume 1 Ultimate Collection

New X-Men Volume 1 Ultimate Collection

Taking reign of the X-Men World, Grant Morrison (The Filth, The Invisibles) starts the series completely from scratch. Along with illustrator Franky Quitely (Batman And Robin, All Star Superman) a new adventure begins with Marvel’s New X-Men.

Mutant kind faces one their worst days yet. In one fell swop the whole of Genosha is destroyed, killing 16 million mutants all at once. The X-Men are left to pick up the pieces and figure out who is behind such a despicable act. While this is happening Wolverine and Cyclopes are being held captive. The woman’s name is Ms. Nova and she has a single thought in her mind–to kill the X-Men.

Grant Morrison is known for being extremely innovative in whatever he touches and this is no different. By leaving behind the old story lines he is able to take the series in any direction he wants to go. He gives the X-Men a much more modern and fresh take on who they are. With the artwork of Frank Quitely this is breathtaking ride that should not be missed.

Marvel Universe Vs. The Avengers

Marvel Universe Vs. The Avengers

With a strange disease ravaging the world and the population quickly dwindling, it’s up to the Avengers to save everyone. This mini series is written by Jonathan Maberry (Marvel Universe Vs The Punisher, Marvel Universe Vs Wolverine) and illustrated by Leandro Fernandez (Punisher MAX, Wolverine).

The world changed over night when, what appeared to be Spiderman trying to stop Rhino was actually Spiderman attacking him. From this singular event a disease started to spread across the world. The disease caused people to become mad with rage and an urge eat flesh. The Avengers tried to rally together but in the end they failed. The remaining members are now holed up together trying whatever they can to stop the disease.

This series is placed after Marvel Universe Vs. Wolverine but before Marvel Universe Vs. The Punisher. The story is told through the perspective of Hawkeye and how he views these events. Great story with an unexpected twist at the end of the first issue. You feel quite hopeless as you see what the Avengers are going through. Can be read out of order as each mini-series is set in a different time period.

Comic Review: Deadpool Merc With A Mouth Head Trip

Deadpool Merc With A Mouth Head Trip

Deadpool Merc With A Mouth Head Trip

A Deadpool comic that is filled with A.I.M., Hydra, multiple Deadpools and alternate dimensions–what could go wrong? This fun series from Marvel is written by Victor Gischler (The Shadow, X-Men) and illustrated by Bong Dazo (Avengers: The Initiative, War Of Kings).

Deadpool is once again out on a job when he crash lands into the Savage Lands. His mission is to retrieve a biological weapon for the scientists at A.I.M. before Hydra can get their hands on it. About to venture out, he finds a statue of himself and is praised as a God. It’s not until his A.I.M. contact arrives that he finds out that the statue wasn’t made for him. It was made for the decapitated head of Zombie Deadpool. Coincidentally that is the item he was sent to retrieve.

Another great Deadpool series that is full of the usual Deadpooly goodness. There are the vocies in his head, the interactions between Marvel characters and of course the beautiful women who never show him any love. Merc with a mouth is especially good thanks to the multiple versions of himself. If you enjoyed this be sure to check out the series that follows it, Deadpool Corps.
