Comic Review: Preacher Volume 1 Gone To Texas

Preacher Volume 1 Gone To Texas

Preacher Volume 1 Gone To Texas

I love a comic that is really f’d up and weird, but at the same time has a story that is deep, very complex and highly interesting. Preacher just happens to be such a comic. Who else but Garth Ennis (The Boys, Punisher:MAX) and Steve Dillon (Hellblazer, Judge Dredd) and where else but Vertigo of course!

Reverend Jesse Custer was a priest living in a small town full of hypocritical church goers. One Sunday during a heated sermon he was struck with the spirit of some heavenly being. Now filled with the power of this spirit he has one mission. Find god and make him pay for all the hell the people of this world have been put through.

This book has so much going for it. A sprawling story through the entirety of its run that goes to so many interesting locations. Main characters with so many flaws you find yourself yelling at the pages “why are you doing that”. With an array of supporting characters, you want to know everything about their lives. So many crazy things that you keep wondering how it’s possible to get weirder–but it does.

Comic Review: Punisher MAX Volume 1 Kingpin

Punisher MAX Volume 1 Kingpin

Punisher MAX Volume 1 Kingpin

This is a reboot of the Punisher MAX series with a new continuous storyline. In this volume Jason Aaron (The Other Side, Scalped) and artist Steve Dillon (Skreemer, Preacher) tell the re-imagined origin story of Kingpin.

The Punisher is doing what he usually does–killing bad guys. As he moves through the streets he starts to hear whispers about a boss of bosses coming to town. His name is The Kingpin but The Punisher has never seen or heard of him before. With the streets preparing for his arrival can The Punisher find him. Or will The Kingpin be standing over his dead body–if he even exists that is.

As always the MAX series is known for its gore and violence. It definitely does not disappoint. The new origin of Kingpin is a brutal story that is very satisfying. I liked the previous MAX series but what’s really enjoyable about this series is the continuation. Each volume leads into the next following the ending of the previous issue.

Comic Review: The Punisher Welcome Back Frank

The Punisher Welcome Back Frank

The Punisher Welcome Back Frank

The Punisher 2004 movie was based around this comic and of course it’s hard to capture everything from the book. Especially with Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Boys) writing and Steve Dillon(Thunderbolts, Wolverine:Origins) doing the illustrations for this Marvel title.

The punisher has been gone from New York for quite a while and it’s time to let the people know he’s back in town. A good place to start is taking out the criminal family of Ma Gnucci. Frank has more than enough to contend with the police, daredevil and the Russian on his case. To top it off a couple people are copying The Punisher and killing in the name of justice. It will only be awhile before everything starts to close in on The Punisher.

So many different things going on in this story. The duo of Ennis and Dillon help showcase each others talents once again. It really is quite a hefty read but well worth it. If you haven’t read any Punisher before this is a good jumping on point for new readers.
