Aaron and Ahmed A Love Story

Aaron and Ahmed A Love Story

If you are looking for a love story, sorry this is not the place. If you are looking for a frank discussion on terrorism, religion, beliefs, ideals and how far people go/what they will do–then by golly this ones for you. Writer Jay Cantor (Great Neck, The Death Of Che Guevara) and artist James Romberger (Tales From The Crypt, Gangland) bring this thought provoking tale to Vertigo.

Aaron Goodman works in Guantanamo Bay and has ever since his wife died on 9/11.  He interrogates prisoners trying out new methods based on psychology. If he can get them to trust him and feel as though they are his friend, maybe they will confide in him. It seems that with Ahmed this is beginning to work. But, trust goes both ways and this takes Aaron on a journey that he may never come back from.

It’s a book that really makes question and think about what you are reading and seeing. What would you do? What wouldn’t you do? What would you let happen? This is not a happy book, don’t mistake that for me saying it’s bad quite the opposite. It leaves you with a very satisfying uneasy feeling.

Testament Volume 1 Akedah

Testament Volume 1 Akedah

A series about gods, drugs, technology and the past and present overlapping. An original and thought provoking series from Vertigo written by Douglas Rushkoff (Club Zero-G, A.D.D.) and illustrated by Liam Sharp (Gears Of War, Spawn:The Dark Ages).

Everyone says that the past is repeated in the future but what if that was true? What if the gods we pray to manipulate events that occur in the past and the present simultaneously? Pretty soon Jake Stern and his friends are going to find out!

Such an ambitious and interesting series. The ideas are pretty heavy and the locations span the globe. It may not be for everyone but if it interests you it’s really hard to put down. If you’ve read Club Zero you can see the influences in the ending.

Sweet Tooth Volume 1 Out Of The Deep Woods

Sweet Tooth Volume 1 Out Of The Deep Woods

Sweet Tooth is a new take on the post apocalyptic world. Jeff Lemire (Justice League Dark, Trillium) does the writing and illustrations for this Vertigo Comic.

Over a decade ago something called the affliction killed billions of people. There appeared to be a side affect from this. All children born after the affliction are a human/animal hybrid. Gus is one such child who’s nickname is sweet tooth. One day he is saved from two hunters by a man called Mr. Jepperd. He tells Gus of a place called “The Preserve” where his kind can be safe and promises to lead him there.

With sweet tooth it doesn’t take much to get you binge reading. Jeff Lemire’s usual artwork style really lends itself to the post apocalyptic world with it’s grainy, unkempt approach. With this type of setting you are always wondering where they will be going next. You look forward to new locations when mentioned in conversation. A good book that will reward your curiosity as the story unfolds.

Comic Review: The Filth

The Filth

The Filth

As the name entails, The Filth deals with some pretty gross and disgusting subjects. Be warned you may feel queasy from time to time but this is Grant Morrison (JLA, Batman Incorporated) writing for Vertigo so expect the unexpected.

To be honest this is a really hard comic to explain. I’ve read it a few times and I’m not sure I really know whats going on. To give you an idea, it’s more confusing than The Invisibles. There is a guy pissing on miniaturized world, giant sperm attacking a city killing people and a secret orginization called the hand that keeps the Status Q. Chris Weston (The Dreaming, Judge Dredd) who does the artwork must have had a hell of a time on this comic. There is so much going on that it’s hard to make sense of it all. I can’t really give a proper description of this comic all I can say is if you like Grant Morrison you should give this book a try.

Get Jiro

Get Jiro

A comic book written by Anthony Bourdain, can you ask for anything better. If you’ve seen any of his shows than you know you are in for a treat. Along with artist Langdon Foss (Heavy Metal Magazine, Justice League) it is another appetizing entry from Vertigo

Food rules supreme and is the be all end all of life. Chefs are the new power and people will do anything to eat at the best restaurants. Jiro has come all the way to L.A. to open up a sushi restaurant in the outer ring of the city. Over the past 6 months he has been building up an underground reputation as a man who knows his sushi. It doesn’t take long before he attracts the attention of the two main chefs in the inner ring of the city. Both desperate to acquire Jiro, will he pick one over the other or will he forge his own path.

The idea behind this comic is great. A food obsessed society where chefs are like mob bosses vying for territory. Even entertainment like music is based around food. I found that the artwork made me hungry, every thing looked so good.Since it’s written by Anthony Bourdain, if you are a chef or someone who really understands cooking food, you will appreciate this on a whole other level.

Comic Review: Jonny Double

Jonny Double

Jonny Double

This is the comic that brought Brain Azzarello (Wonder Woman, Deathblow) and Eduardo Risso (Spaceman, Vamps) together for the very first time. Jonny Double from Vertigo is what eventually lead to 100 Bullets.

Jonny Double is a down on his luck aging private investigator. He’s barely getting by with the money he makes and his latest client turned up dead. His luck may be turning around on his next job though. The girl he is being paid to keep tabs on has told him of a 5 figure heist. It’s guaranteed to be a walk in the park. But with everything going so well, can it really be that easy?

I find that with the artwork of Risso you can get the faces mixed up from time to time. If you’ve read 100 Bullets you will defiantly see some characters that started out in this series. Not the same people exactly but their essence and looks. A quick read that will be enjoyed all the more knowing how far Azzarello and Risso have come since.

Northlanders Volume 1 Sven The Returned

Northlanders Volume 1 Sven The Returned

If you’ve seen the TV series Vikings on the History Channel you may be craving more. A good place to get your fill is with the series Northlanders from Vertigo. Brian Wood (Demo, DMZ) and artist Davide Gianfelice (Greek Street, Six Guns) give you all the vikings you can handle plus a little extra.

Sven has found out that his father, back in Orkney, has died. All his land and money which should have been his, has been claimed by his uncle Gorm. He returns home to settle things with his uncle and to leave and never return. But things do not go according to plan. Sven begins a one man war against his uncle to reclaim what is rightfully his.

The illustrations are as visually pleasing as you would expect from a comic about vikings. The story arcs can be as short as 2 issues or in this volume as long as 8. So throughout the series you get many different tales about other people, places and times.

Loveless Volume 1 A Kin Of Homecoming

Loveless Volume 1 A Kin Of Homecoming

Nothing like a good ol western with a side of revenge. Yup, I reckon that there’s some mighty fine reading. So come round the campfire and listen to this Vertigo tale from Brian Azzarello (El Diablo, Cage) and Marcelo Frusin (Hellblazer, Flinch).

Wes Cutter has come back to his hometown of Blackwater to right some wrongs. A brother who has been spreading rumors that he is dead. Friends who want to see him dead. Trying to put the pieces of what happened to his wife after he left for war. If you have wronged Wes Cutter than you are surely damned.

Great story all around, it’s hard not to like a western. My biggest problem is it goes back from past to present quite a lot. I found my self getting confused about what exactly was happening every now and again.

Comic Review: The Invisibles Volume 1 Say You Want A Revolution

The Invisibles Volume 1 Say You Want A Revolution

The Invisibles Volume 1 Say You Want A Revolution

A comic about many of Grant Morrison’s (Batman Legends, Animal Man) interests at the time. Magic, conspiracies, drug experiences, alien abduction and many other topics. It’s definitely a fun ride. This Vertigo comic is a Morrison must and being that, it’s sure to be chalk full of lovely weird strange things.

Dane McGowan is an angry young rebel who is sick of society. His life is going nowhere until he meets King Mob. He is the leader of The Invisibles, a group of counterculture revolutionary soldiers and assassins. They’re fighting the people trying to shape the future of the world for their own gain. Dane has stepped into a world of things he can’t even begin to imagine. One of them being that he has a big role to play in the war for our future.

An unbelievably imaginative story that jumps from idea to idea. Steve Yeowell (Starman, Judge Dredd) illustrates everything from giant cities, secret government bases, extra dimensional beings and past and future societies. Be warned if you start this series your brain will hurt but it’s that good kinda hurt.

Saucer Country Volume 1 Run

Saucer Country Volume 1 Run

What’s worse than being abducted by aliens and no one believing you? How about being abducted, while running for president and not being able to tell anyone. A Vertigo series about aliens written by Paul Cornell (Demon Knights, Action Comcis) and illustrated by Ryan Kelly (Local, American Virgin).

Arcadia Alvarado is the governor of New Mexico and is considering running for President Of The United States. She does have a couple of things that may stop that dream before it starts. Her ex-husband Michael, who is an alcoholic and the one night where she claims she was abducted by aliens. Only remembering bits and pieces of it, she enlists the help of a former Harvard professor, Professor Kidd. She hopes that he can return the memory of what happened that night.

Super fun comic full of intriguingly weird subject matter. Artwork is great kinda has a 1950’s era feel to it. In some of the issues they have separate stories about people’s true tales of abduction.
